The tools worth knowing about
There are many AI assistants available today, ranging from free chat interfaces to editor-integrated tools that complete your code as you type. You don’t need all of them — pick one you already have access to and start there.ChatGPT
The most widely-used AI assistant. Excellent for explaining concepts, answering “why does this work?” questions, and walking through code step by step. A free tier is available.
Claude
Anthropic’s assistant, particularly strong for complex reasoning, detailed explanations, and long code reviews. Well-suited to nuanced debugging questions. A free tier is available.
GitHub Copilot
Integrates directly into VS Code and suggests code completions as you type. Reduces the friction of typing boilerplate and helps you explore library APIs without leaving your editor.
Cursor
An AI-native code editor built on top of VS Code. You can ask it questions about your code, request refactors, and get explanations inline — without switching windows.
You don’t need a paid subscription to follow this course. Every AI tool listed above has a free version that is more than sufficient for learning Python. Explore paid options if you find yourself hitting limits.
The right way to ask for help
The quality of the answer you get from an AI assistant depends almost entirely on how you frame your question. Vague prompts get vague answers. Specific, contextual prompts get specific, useful ones.- ❌ Unhelpful prompt

Strategies that build real understanding
1
Ask for explanations, not just answers
Instead of “write me a function that does X,” ask “explain how Python functions work, then show me an example that does X.” You’ll remember it better because you understand the why.
2
Share your code and the exact error message
When debugging, paste your full code block and the complete error message. AI assistants are significantly more accurate when they have the full context rather than a paraphrased description.
3
Request multiple approaches
Ask “show me three different ways to solve this problem.” Seeing alternatives teaches you that there’s rarely one correct answer in Python — and helps you understand the tradeoffs between different approaches.
4
Test the suggestions yourself
Never copy AI-generated code without running it and reading it line by line. If something isn’t working the way you expect, ask a follow-up question. Understanding why code works is the whole point.
Create your own personal Python tutor
One of the most powerful things you can do is configure an AI assistant with a custom system prompt that makes it behave like a patient, structured Python tutor. Here’s one you can use directly — it’s designed to align with how this course teaches Python.- ChatGPT

The right mindset
AI assistants are tools to enhance your learning, not replace it. They’re like having a knowledgeable friend available 24/7 — but if you only ever ask that friend to do your homework, you won’t learn anything. Ask them to explain, to question you, to show alternatives. That’s how you build the kind of deep, flexible understanding that lets you build anything.Ready to set up your environment?
